Note that all attacks that affect "hard" stats (ATK, DEF, SPEED, STACHE) only affect the the base value of the stats affected. In the case of Toad's Attack-Defense swap special, no stat is ever allowed to fall below 0 (including any subtraction due to equipment). Ergo, if one has 2 ATK and 14(-4) DEF, then uses the special, he will have 14 ATK and 4(-4) DEF while it is in effect (the values return to their normal 2 and 14 afterwards, nonetheless).
